What is Diabetes

diabetes careDiabetes mellitus (just called diabetes from now on) occurs when the level of glucose (sugar) in the blood becomes higher than normal. There are two main types of diabetes. These are called type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes typically develops in children and young adults when the body stops producing insulin, resulting in very high glucose levels. Type 2 diabetes is also known as maturity-onset or non-insulin-dependent diabetes and usually develops after the age of 40. Type 2 is more common in people who are overweight or obese.

For the ongoing management of diabetes, it is important to monitor several physiological parameters. Glucose levels need to be assessed to ensure that you do not go hyper- or hypoglycaemic (too high or too low blood sugar levels) which can harm your organs. Diabetic persons generally suffer from accelerated atherosclerosis, the deposition of fat in the arteries, which may cause many diseases, for example stroke and cardiovascular diseases. Elevated LDL cholesterol levels further accelerate atherosclerosis, significantly increasing the risk of ruptures and thrombosis leading to heart attack or angina and. Similarly, hypotension, increased blood pressure, can cause severe damage to vital organs, stroke, kidney damage and renal failure, amongst others.

Controlling for Glucose, Cholesterol and blood pressure levels and ensuring they are in the normal range significantly reduces your risk of suffering from diabetes related complications including heart attack and strokes.
